We eat 7 herb rice porridge on January 7th every year in Japan and it’s the only other time I eat “okayu” or rice porridge is this day or when I’m sick 😂
Anyone else’s stomachs feeling extra tired already and we’re only a week into the new year? 😅
I know it’s been a busy week back for many people so I’m hoping for the coziest meals for you!❤️

Which is the ultimate Japanese sweet potato type as a yakiimo (slow roasted sweet potato)?! 🍠
焼き芋にしたとき、究極の日本のさつまいもはどれ？？🍠

There are apparently over 40 different kinds of Japanese sweet potatoes with different textures like “hoku hoku” (drier/flaky), “nettori” (sticky), or shittori (smooth).
This year I am hoping to try as many sweet potato varieties as I can find but so far Beni Azuma and Beni Haruka are the ones I see the most often at the grocery store — maybe I need to go visit a sweet potato farmer 🤣
Which sweet potato do you think you’d prefer?

My 2026 osechi! ⭐️ 2026のおせちです！

Happy new year everyone! 🎍 Thankful for another year of getting to talk about all things food with you and excited for all the yummy food we’ll get to eat this year! 🤩
My personal favorite is the “Kuromame” where I followed my 83-year-old neighbor’s recipe and it comes out perfect every time!
I also made sweetened kumquats for the first time this year and LOVED IT so I will be making this for my osechi every year moving forward.

The reason why I started making my family’s osechi every year is because I wanted more of each item and to be able to season it the way we like (aka make things a little less sweet lol). Now it’s become a yearly tradition that is so time consuming but I love that I feel like I am getting a little bit better every year and my flower carrots are getting less pointy and intense so that’s a good sign!

Are there items you like in particular in your osechi? (Or don’t like? 😂) I want to know!!

Otsukare (“good work”) in 2025 and let’s ganbare (“do our best”) in 2026!! 🤍

今年もみなさんと食べものの話をたくさんできたことに感謝しつつ、これから一年おいしいものをたくさん食べられるのが楽しみです🤩

いちばんのお気に入りは黒豆。
83歳の大好きなご近所さんに教えてもらったレシピで作っていて、毎年安定のおいしさです。
今年は初めて金柑の甘露煮にも挑戦してみたのですが、これが大ヒット…！
これからは毎年おせちに入れたい一品になります！

私が毎年家族のおせちを作るようになった理由は、それぞれをもっとたくさん食べたかったのと、味付けを自分たち好みにしたかったから（甘さ控えめが好きなので😂）。
今ではかなり時間のかかる毎年の恒例行事になりましたが、少しずつ上達しているのを感じられるのがうれしいです。
花にんじんも、だんだん尖りすぎなくなってきたので、いい成長かなとww

Finally a video on how to make the cake I make for everyone I love! 🤍
This Japanese-style strawberry shortcake was what my mom made me every year for my birthday because I didn’t love the frosting cakes in the U.S.
Now I get to make it for her every year during the holidays, and it’s become one of my favorite family traditions!

Soft, fluffy sponge cake, lightly sweetened whipped cream, and fresh strawberries — simple, not too sweet, and honestly perfect💕
I walk through the whole process in this video, so even if you’ve never made a sponge cake before, you can follow along!

The ingredients are listed below and the full recipe is up on my blog!

Ingredients
[Sponge Cake]
• 160 g whole eggs
• 100 g granulated sugar
• 7 g honey
• 100 g cake flour
• 26 g unsalted butter
• 26 g milk
• Vanilla extract and/or vanilla bean paste

[Simple Syrup]
• 2 tbsp granulated sugar
• 4 tbsp water
• 1 tbsp kirsch (optional)

[Whipped Cream]
• 290 g heavy cream
• 16 g sugar

[Filling & Topping]
• Fresh strawberries
• Powdered sugar (optional)
• Cake toppers or candles (optional)

このいちごショートケーキは、アメリカのフロスティングたっぷりのケーキがあまり好きじゃなかった私のために、子どもの頃から母が毎年誕生日に作ってくれていたケーキです。
今では私が母のために毎年ホリデーシーズンに作るようになり、家族の大切な定番になりました！

ふわふわのスポンジに、甘さ控えめの生クリーム、そしてフレッシュないちご。
シンプルだけど、やっぱりこれがいちばん💕

動画では最初から最後まで工程を紹介しているので、スポンジケーキが初めての方でも安心して作れます！
材料は下にまとめていて、詳しいレシピはブログに載せています🍓

材料
［スポンジケーキ］
・全卵 160g
・グラニュー糖 100g
・はちみつ 7g
・薄力粉 100g
・無塩バター 26g
・牛乳 26g
・バニラエクストラクトまたはバニラビーンズペースト

［シンプルシロップ］
・グラニュー糖大さじ2
・水大さじ4
・キルシュ大さじ1（任意）

［生クリーム］
・生クリーム 290g

Little Lina would be squealing knowing I now have my very own custom charm bracelet 🥹✨
People who know me know I’ve always loved all things sky — stars, the sun, the moon, clouds. I think it’s because the sky always felt so big and limitless. ⭐️
Looking up has always brought me so much peace, and I wanted to carry that feeling with me when I got to make this bracelet at Pandora! 🤩
When I first got certified to be a yoga instructor a few years back, there was a lot of focus on sun and moon — light and dark as balance — and the idea that you can’t have one without the other. That idea has really been sticking with me during this season of incredibly tough moments and unbelievably joyful ones, too.
Lately, as grief has been a bigger theme in my life and everything feels like it’s moving at 100 miles an hour, I’ve found myself looking up at the sky more than usual and am reminded there is so much more than what’s right in front of me and we only can take it one day at a time 💕
One of the mixed metal charms holds the phrase 試練を乗り越えて輝く, which means “to shine through adversity,” and it’s felt like a small comfort during a tender season.
As the year winds down and everything seems to pile on at once, I’m hoping we can all be a little gentler with ourselves this season 🤍

星とか太陽とか月とか雲とか✨見上げると落ち着くし、気持ちが少し軽くなる。

You can’t celebrate Christmas in Japan without a cake! My personal favorite is the classic Japanese strawberry shortcake! 🍰🎄⭐️

I look forward to baking my family a Christmas cake every year, but it’s been so busy with my grandma that I didn’t think I’d get to this year! Feeling extra grateful for time in the kitchen baking for the people I love and am reminded how much joy baking brings me 💕

Warning: I didn’t follow the original kabocha mitarashi dango recipe exactly, but I am posting the photo of it along with writing up the one I made (in English and Japanese) since it was highly requested! 🥰
My mom finds it so funny that people are interested in recipes she collected over 45 years ago! She doesn’t even know who wrote it but it’s fun to look at the Japanese food someone was making 🤩

I will be testing it again with steaming or cooking the kabocha first (instead of grating it) so if you want the refined and tested recipe, I’ll have it for you next week!

元のかぼちゃみたらし団子のレシピをそのまま作ったわけじゃないんですが、リクエストがすごく多かったので、レシピの写真と、私が実際に作ったバージョン（英語＆日本語）をまとめて載せておきます🥰 母は「そんなにレシピに興味ある人いるの？」って大笑いしてました笑 45年以上前に集めたレシピらしく、誰が書いたのかも覚えていないそうなんですが、当時どんな日本食を作っていたのか見るのって楽しいですよね🤩

それから、来週はかぼちゃをあらかじめ加熱してから生地に混ぜる作り方でも作り直してみる予定です。 ちゃんと検証した完成版レシピが欲しい方は、来週またチェックしてくださいね！

Just a reminder we are still in the thick of Japanese slow roasted sweet potato or “yakiimo” season which means I make miso butter & soy sauce sweet potatoes at least 3 times a week for my snack! 🍠😍
“Make” is a strong word for putting on miso butter and soy sauce 😅 but I do roast my own Japanese sweet potatoes perfectly every single time if I do say so myself ✨🤣

Koji is truly the backbone of Japanese cooking — it ferments so many of your favorite ingredients like miso, soy sauce, sake and mirin!

I previously shared how to make shio-koji, the ultimate salt umami sauce to add to your cooking, and this time, we’re making amazake 甘酒!

Hi ❤️ I’ve been absent on here for a bit and I so appreciate you being patient with me. I know a lot of you found my page through videos with my grandma which I absolutely love that we all love my Grandma Kazu. We’ve recently gotten some heartbreaking news related to her health and I’ve had to take a little bit of time away to focus on her. This video was from this summer and I have been looking back at how much she LOVES food and especially desserts! She is clearly team melon 🍈 over team mango 🥭 and somehow her made up fruit (??) will stick over mango lolol. A big reason why I moved to Japan 3 years ago was to spend more time with my grandma, and I’m grateful to have been able to cook for her and film silly videos with her💕 Hoping to show up on here more again, especially with Grandma Kazu content that I have saved and never got around to editing. I know my future self will be grateful to get to look back on these videos of how funny she is. Thank you always for all of the love on videos with her — she still can’t quite wrap her mind around how many people have seen her eat ice cream but she loves it so much 😄 As always, so grateful you’re here and a reminder to hug your loved ones extra tight every chance you get ❤️

私のページをおばあちゃんとの動画で見つけてくれた方も多いと思いますが、みんなが祖母を好きでいてくれるのが本当にうれしいです。
最近、おばあちゃんの体調について少しつらい知らせがあり、ここしばらくはこちらを少し休ませていただきました。
この動画は夏に撮ったもので、改めて「おばあちゃん、本当に食べるのが大好きなんだな〜」って思います。特に甘いもの！🍮 メロン🍈派なのはもちろん、マンゴー🥭よりも謎の果物（？）のほうが印象に残ってるみたいで、笑っちゃいました😂
3年前に日本に引っ越したのも、おばあちゃんと過ごす時間をもっと大切にしたかったからもあります。 料理を作ってあげることができたり、ふざけた動画を一緒に撮ったりできた時間は、本当に宝物のような思い出です💕
まだ編集できていないおばあちゃん動画もたくさんあるりますし、アメリカのコンテンツもたまっているので、少しずつアップしていけたらいいなと思ってます。 きっと未来の自分も、祖母の面白さが詰まったこの動画たちを見返して、うれしくなるはず。

Welcome back to KONNYAKU PART 2! ✨
こんにゃくシリーズ第二弾！ついに！✨

I am answering why some people might experience stomach aches after eating konnyaku while I make my favorite sesame chicken tan tan noodle dish with Shirataki noodles! I know it’s ironic I’m cooking a big bowl of these konnyaku noodles while I tell you how it could hurt you 🤣🤣 but it mostly happens to people who have never had it and eat a LOT!

I know that it has become a pretty popular diet food (especially in Asia) but I am definitely NOT recommending it as a replacement for ramen noodles or other form of noodles. It could seriously cause digestive discomfort for some people if you have a sensitive stomach so just be aware! ⚠️
I eat it because I LOVE the bouncy texture and I hope you try it if you’re curious too :)

今日は、なぜこんにゃくを食べるとお腹がゴロゴロする人がいるのかを答えつつ、私のお気に入り「ごま鶏タンタン風しらたき麺」を作ります！ これ作りながら「お腹に注意してね」って言うの、ちょっとおもしろいけどww 🤣🤣
お腹が痛くなる人はほとんどこんにゃくを食べたことがない人が多い気がするけど、一気にたくさん食べる場合に起こる人もいる。
こんにゃくはアジアで人気のダイエット食になってるけど、ラーメンや他の麺の代わりにはあまりおすすめしないかな。
食感も味も全然違うから、ラーメンの代わりよりは白滝の食感が好きだから私は食べてる！ お腹が敏感な人は消化不良になることもあるので注意してね〜⚠️ 気になる方はぜひ試してみてくださいね：）

RECIPE (2 servings)
[A] NOODLES ・350g shirataki konnyaku ・1 tbsp sugar
[B] CHICKEN ・150g ground chicken ・1/2 tsp garlic paste ・1/2 tsp grated ginger ・1 tsp gochujang (adjust to taste) ・1 tsp chili bean sauce (optional)
[C] SOUP BASE ・100–120 ml soy milk ・100–120 ml water ・1 tsp chicken stock powder ・1–2 tbsp miso ・1 tbsp ground white sesame
[D] TOPPINGS (optional) ・Green onions ・White sesame ・Chili oil
HOW TO MAKE
1. Rinse shirataki, cut if too long.
2. Massage with sugar → let it sit 10–15 min to reduce the smell.
3. Cook chicken and season based on your spice tolerance — set aside.
4. Mix soup base ingredients in a pot.
5. Rinse shirataki again, drain well, then add to soup.
6. Heat gently (don’t fully boil or soy milk will split), add chicken back in.
7. Serve and top with your [D] toppings. Enjoy!
